About the Institutions

HZB is one of 18 Helmholtz centers in Germany, employing over 1,200 people. It conducts cutting-edge research on materials and technologies for a climate-neutral future and promotes interdisciplinary approaches in data science and materials research.

This joint professorship with Freie Universität Berlin aims to:

• Strengthen collaboration between HZB and FU Berlin

• Develop future IT infrastructures

• Lead the planned Institute for Data-Driven Material Research

• Support projects like BESSY II and BESSY III synchrotron facilities

The position also includes a role as Chief Information/Data Officer (CIO/CDO) at HZB.

Academic Responsibilities at FU Berlin

• Affiliation with the Institute of Mathematics

• Teach two weekly credit hours

• Supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD theses

• Conduct advanced interdisciplinary research in data-driven materials science

Duties at HZB

• Establish and lead a new Institute for Data-Driven Material Research

• Represent the "Information" research field on the extended Board of Directors

• Contribute to the design and use of the future data science building

• Coordinate large-scale research data and promote synergy among 100+ research groups

Qualifications

In accordance with Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerIHG), candidates must:

• Have extensive leadership and management experience

• Possess an outstanding research profile in:

  • Mathematics

  • Physics, chemistry, computer science, materials science (with mathematical focus)

• Be internationally recognized in data science applications

• Have expertise in areas such as:

  • AI and machine learning (including deep learning)

  • Simulation and optimization

  • HPC, big data management

  • Foundation models, NLP

  • Digital materials design and informatics

• Ideally have experience in:

  • Applying data science to materials science

  • 3D imaging, high-throughput tomography

  • Leading externally funded research projects

  • Teaching at the university level, preferably internationally

• Have excellent English or German skills, and willingness to acquire missing language skills within 3 years

The appointee is expected to:

• Build and sustain networks with national/international partners

• Collaborate with:

  • Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB)

  • MATH+ Cluster of Excellence

  • Berlin University Alliance

• Lead joint research activities across HZB and FU Berlin

• Contribute to teaching in mathematics and data science programs

• Promote gender equity, diversity, and sustainability
