Application deadline: 09.10.2025

The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Tübingen invites applications for a

Tenure-track professorship (W1 with tenure track to W3) in Machine Learning Methods in Business and Economics (f/m/d)

to be filled at the earliest possible date.

This position is being advertised in cooperation with the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science”, which has recently entered its second funding period.

We seek a scholar who applies machine learning methods to economic or business research questions in an innovative manner, or who contributes to the development of machine learning methodology with clear relevance for economic research. Evidence of such contributions should be demonstrated through the recognizable potential for publications in leading international journals in business/economics or statistics/econometrics. In addition, recognizable potential for publications in the field of machine learning (including top-ranked conference proceedings) is also welcome. The successful candidate must demonstrate broad intellectual and methodological compatibility with both the School of Business and Economics and the Faculty, as well as with the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning in Science”. A focus on empirically applicable methods in both research and teaching is expected. A commitment to open science practices is welcomed.

The professorship is intended to foster close collaboration between research in business/economics and research in machine learning at the University of Tübingen. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage with the Cluster of Excellence, both by contributing to collaborative research at the interface of machine learning and economics and by participating in the organizational activities and implementation of the Cluster’s goals. Further information about the Cluster can be found at https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/research/core-research/cluster-of-excellence-machine-learning/home/

In teaching, the successful candidate is required to contribute to the degree programs of the School of Business and Economics. Upon successful final evaluation, the professorship will play a leading role in the methodological training of students (in statistics, econometrics, and machine learning) at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Teaching in the international Master’s program in “Machine Learning” offered by the Department of Computer Science is also possible.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field and should have an outstanding dissertation as well as recognizable potential for internationally visible publications in the relevant areas mentioned above. Experience in acquiring third-party research funding and in academic teaching is advantageous. The appointment prerequisites of §51 LHG apply. The position has a teaching load of four hours per week prior to interim evaluation, and six hours thereafter. Those who have completed a habilitation will be excluded. Applicants for a tenure-track professorship with a PhD from Tübingen must have changed universities after completing their doctorates or have worked in academia for at least two years somewhere other than the University of Tübingen.

This Tenure-Track position is subject to an interim evaluation after four years and a final evaluation after six years. If the final evaluation is positive, this professorship will be upgraded to a full (W3) professorship with no re-advertising of the position.

Detailed information on this employment category and the criteria underlying the interim evaluation and promotion to the tenured position may be found in our guidelines for tenure review . There you can also find information on this employment category.

The University of Tübingen is committed to equity and diversity and actively promotes equal opportunities. Female academics, in particular, are explicitly invited to apply, as are applicants from outside Germany. Applications from equally qualified candidates with disabilities will be given preference.
