PhD Position in Physics100%, Zurich, fixed-termThe Quantum AI lab at ETH (Prof. Juan Carrasquilla ) invites applications for PhD positions to work at the intersection of computational quantum many-body physics, machine learning, quantum computing, and quantum machine learning. Project backgroundIn the wake of quantum mechanics' initial breakthroughs, we're on the brink of a second quantum revolution. Quantum physicists are adopting machine learning to explore complex quantum systems, opening doors to advancements in fields like materials science and quantum chemistry. Similarly, quantum physicists are exploring the use of quantum effects to advance machine learning. Our lab's long-term goal is to advance these areas and extend the applicability of machine learning ideas to the solution of critical problems in quantum many-body physics with ramifications in condensed matter theory, machine learning, quantum materials, chemistry, as well as quantum technology. Job descriptionIn this role, you will be at the forefront of addressing several fundamental questions including: How can we best simulate strongly correlated quantum systems and harness the power of both classical and quantum computing resources? How can we exploit or take inspiration from quantum physics to develop cutting-edge machine learning? Your work will encompass a diverse array of concepts at the intersection of artificial intelligence, condensed matter physics, and quantum computing. You will dive deep into the realms of theoretical and computational physics with a focus on the development of algorithms and large-scale numerical simulations. Your expertise will extend to various areas, including quantum Monte Carlo, machine learning, quantum computing, quantum machine learning, and tensor networks. These and other techniques will allow us to confront challenges within the domains of equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of quantum many-body systems, quantum computing, and machine learning, where you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of our understanding and capabilities in these groundbreaking fields. This position is full-time, with flexible starting dates in 2024.
