Your Role

The successful candidate will strengthen the Department of Law’s research area in Banking, Financial and Commercial Law, which is a cornerstone of the Department’s academic profile and a key contributor to the University’s reputation. They will pursue research and teaching in this field, focussing on Luxembourg, EU, and comparative transnational perspectives.

The position is of strategic relevance given the Department’s ambition to maintain its leadership in financial law, a domain central to Luxembourg’s role as a global financial centre.

Key responsibilities and expectations:

  • Develop an internationally recognized research profile in banking law broadly, e.g., prudential regulation and bank supervision, depositary law, regulation of payments and payment systems, financial technologies, sustainable finance, secured transactions and consumer financial contracts, links to financial markets law

  • Publish extensively in top-tier peer-reviewed journals, monographs, or authoritative treatises

  • Contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives such as the FutureFinTechNCER and/or collaborate with the Department of Finance in the field of sustainable finance

  • Teach in core areas of banking law; ability to contribute to related areas of commercial law (financial and securities law, company law, insolvency law, law of commercial contracts and torts) is an asset

  • Cover legal frameworks at both EU and Luxembourg levels, adopting a comparative approach including neighbouring jurisdictions and other global financial centres

  • Engage with Luxembourg and EU regulators (CSSF, CBL, ECB, ESMA), international organizations (IOSCO, BIS, FSB), and other stakeholders such as (inter‑)national law firms, industry and academic associations

  • Acquire competitive research funding and establish and lead a research team

  • Show and develop leadership potential within the Department

The candidate will join one of Europe’s most prominent academic groups in banking and financial law, contributing to the University’s “Third Mission” by engaging with Luxembourg and EU financial law, and will be encouraged to develop into a leadership role.


Your Profile

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degree in Law

  • Experience and interest in engaging in academic research at the highest level

  • Publications in internationally recognized journals, monographs with international publishers, or other publications in banking law (or financial law) demonstrating research excellence

  • Potential and aptitude for teaching and supervising research at the university level

  • Excellent academic track record demonstrating scholarly excellence and leadership potential

  • Experience with externally funded research projects and interdisciplinary research is an asset

  • Experience in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of law, finance, and technology is a strong asset

Teaching Commitment:

  • Lecturing in banking law and related topics in financial and commercial law at bachelor and master levels

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, prepare grant applications for external funding, and establish research cooperations in Luxembourg and internationally

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English and French required

  • Knowledge of German is considered an advantage
